‘Spike Island Convict Depot 1847-1883’
A Zoom Lecture by Dr Barra Ó Donnabháin
In this talk, Dr Barra Ó Donnabháin explores the nature of the mid-19thcentury convict depot in Cork harbour through the stories of five men and boys who experienced life in the prison.
Dr Ó Donnabháin directed archaeological excavations at Spike Island from 2013-2018 and is currently a lecturer in the Department of Archaeology at University College Cork. He is co-author with Cal McCarthy of ‘Too Beautiful for Thieves and Pickpockets: a history of the Victorian Convict Prison on Spike Island (2016).
