‘Spike Island Convict Depot 1847-1883’
A Zoom Lecture by Dr Barra Ó Donnabháin
In this talk, Dr Barra Ó Donnabháin explores the nature of the mid-19thcentury convict depot in Cork harbour through the stories of five men and boys who experienced life in the prison.
Dr Ó Donnabháin directed archaeological excavations at Spike Island from 2013-2018 and is currently a lecturer in the Department of Archaeology at University College Cork. He is co-author with Cal McCarthy of ‘Too Beautiful for Thieves and Pickpockets: a history of the Victorian Convict Prison on Spike Island (2016).

A Zoom Lecture on ‘The buildings of Georgian Cork 1714-1830 – city and county’ by Frank Keohane.
A native of Cork City, Frank Keohane is a Chartered Building Surveyor with an independent practice specialising in the repair and refurbishment of historic buildings. Previously a conservation advisor with Dublin Civic Trust, he completed a Masters in Urban and Building Conservation in UCD in 2002 before working for ten years with Paul Arnold Architects.
He is the author of Irish Period Houses: A Conservation Guidance Manual published by Dublin Civic trust in 2016 and The Buildings of Ireland: Cork City and County published by Yale University Press in 2020.

A CHAS Zoom Lecture: ‘To Hell and Back: Ghosts and Perceptions of the Afterlife from Medieval Cork’ by Br. Colmán Ó Clabaigh O.S.B.
Br Colmán Ó Clabaigh O.S.B is a Benedictine monk of Glenstal Abbey, and a specialist in the history of monasticism and religion in Late Medieval Ireland. His doctoral research was published as The Franciscans in Ireland, 1400–1534: from Reform to Reformation (Dublin: Four Courts Press, 2002). His monograph The Friars in Ireland, 1224-1500 (Dublin: Four Courts Press, 2012) was awarded the 2013 National University of Ireland Prize for Irish Historical Research.
He has lectured and taught courses for institutions and organizations in Ireland, Great Britain, Italy and Nigeria and the US. He has been Visiting Professor at the School of Theology, St. John’s University, Minnesota, and also a Burns Visiting Scholar in Boston College.

A CHAS Zoom Lecture: ‘What’s in a name? Irish ‘outrages’ and their multiple meanings: cases from County Cork 1835-1845’ by Dr. Jay Roszman
Agrarian violence was a feature in many parts of rural Ireland in the 18th and 19th centuries. By taking the law into their own hands, those involved put themselves in conflict with the authorities legally, politically and socially and the instances of such ‘outrages’ and how they were perceived and responded to is the topic of the lecture.
Dr. Jay Roszman is a native of Shelburne, Vermont, USA. He has contributed several articles to journals and his monograph ‘Outrage in the Age of Reform: Irish Agrarian Violence, Imperial Insecurity, and British Governing Policy 1830-1845’ is being published by Cambridge University Press in September 2022. He and his family moved to Cork in 2018 where he lectures in the School of History, UCC.

A CHAS Zoom Lecture: ‘Uncovering the social and economic role of uplands in south-west Ireland, c. 1450-1850’ by Dr Eugene Costello
Dr Eugene Costello is a historian and archaeologist whose main interest is in the landscapes and social practices of rural communities. He studied in UCC and the University of Sheffield, before he undertook a PHd in NUI Galway in 2016. He has taught in Galway, Cork and Stockholm where he is currently based. He has published widely. His book Transhumance and the Making of Ireland’s Uplands, 1550-1900 (Boydell Press, 2020) has been described as the first major interdisciplinary approach to the diversity and decline of the practice of moving cattle to upland areas in summer.

Evening outing to Monard Glen, near Blarney, to visit Monard and Coolowen Ironworks, which were in operation from the 1730s to the 1960s. This event will link with the Skills and Traditions of the Past and the Water Heritage themes of National Heritage Week 2022. Speaker: Dr Colin Rynne.
Meet at 7pm at entrance to Monard Glen. Monard Glen is reached by going on the slip road after the sign for Killeens/Limerick over the N20, turning left at the Sunset Ridge Hotel and then straight on for approximately one kilometre. There is a Science Direct sign pointing to Monard Glen at the entrance.
