CHAS Lecture: ‘Artefacts of Selective Memory: Collecting Cork’s Historical Past at Cork Public Museum’ by Dan Breen.
Dan Breen is Curator of Cork Public Museum. During the recent Decade of Centenaries initiative the museum hosted numerous exhibitions, talks and events in response to the public’s wish to better understand the people and events that shaped the history of Cork. In the past, however, many subjects and topics were ignored and deliberately under-represented in the museum’s storerooms and galleries. This lecture will explore this ‘selective memory’ and discuss its impact on the museum, its collections and displays.

CHAS Lecture: ‘The Ford Marina Plant, 1917-1949’ by Dr Liam Cullinane.
In 1917, Henry Ford established a factory on the banks of the River Lee that was to revolutionise the industrial life of Cork City. Liam Cullinane, author of Working in Cork: Everyday Life in Irish Steel, Sunbeam Wolsey and the Ford Marina Plant, 1917-2001 (2020), traces the history of the plant from its founding, through the stormy years of the War of Independence, to the successful unionisation of the factory in 1949.

CHAS Lecture: ‘Cork by design: the legacy of the Hill dynasty of architects’ by Dr Dagmar Ó Riain-Raedel.
The Hill family of architects contributed many noteworthy buildings to Cork. Dr Dagmar Ó Riain-Raedel has a special interest in art and architecture, both medieval and modern and, particularly, in the buildings of Cork. She is the co-author of the recently published book on the Hill architects, copies of which will be available on the night.

Society’s Christmas Event
This event is the Society’s annual social event. It will commence with a reception, with finger food and drinks, followed by a short seasonal presentation entitled ‘The Wolf – the ultimate winter predator’ by Dr Kieran Hickey, Head of School, School of the Human Environment, UCC.
Cost €15 per person. Attendance needs to be booked by registering in advance on the Society’s website.

CHAS Lecture: ‘Ordnance Survey in Ireland 1824 to 1913’ by Richard Kirwan.
This year is the bicentenary of the founding of the Ordnance Survey. Richard Kirwin is former director of the Ordnance Survey and author of If Maps Could Speak. This lecture will explore the memory of the Survey, going back to the sappers and scholars who made it a model for imitation internationally, and will examine how maps can be far more within our understanding than an information vector.

CHAS Lecture: ‘Excavations at the Dominican Priory at St Mary’s of the Isle, Cork’ by Dr Maurice Hurley.
The Dominican priory of St Mary’s of the Isle, Crosse’s Green, was founded in 1229 and this lecture will mark the 800th anniversary of the arrival of the Dominican order in Ireland. Dr Hurley, urban archaeologist and formerly Cork City Archaeologist, conducted the excavations at St Mary’s of the Isle.

CHAS Lecture: ‘Bede and Time’ by Dr Máirín MacCarron.
The Venerable Bede was the leading intellectual figure of the early Anglo-Saxon Church and his creativity and ingenuity were apparent in various areas, including computes (time reckoning). Dr MacCarron’s book on this subject, Bede and Time: computus, theology and history in the early medieval world, won the 2021 Irish Historical Research Prize.

CHAS County Lecture: ‘Archaeological Excavation and Restoration of a Bronze Age stone circle at Gorteanish, West Cork’ by Professor William O’Brien.
One of the aims of the Cork Historical & Archaeological Society is to promote the study of history and archaeology throughout the county and one of the ways it achieves this is through its annual County Lecture Series. This event, co-hosted with the Bantry Historical & Archaeological Society, founded in 1978, is the 2023-24 County Lecture. William O’Brien, Professor of Archaeology, UCC, will reveal the results of the recent excavation of the stone circle at Gorteanish, on the Sheep’s Head peninsula.
